This morning Eugene Cho‘s Facebook post caught my eye. I thought about it all day. By the time I got to Maundy Thursday service at Ecclesia my heart was tender. Pliable.
With singing and readings in the background, people got their feet washed by church leaders. I went up and a woman introduced herself as Liz, asked my name, and told me to place my feet into the water. I felt vulnerable. Exposed. Grateful. Liz touched my feet and began to pray. I could not hear her words but they were as real to me as the touch of her hands on my feet. A woman who did not know me was willing to wash my dirty feet. Who does that? Jesus — and those who truly follow Him.
I went to my seat feeling blessed that a stranger was willing to serve and extend grace to me.
And the this happened.
This wonderful young couple with an infant took their seats in front of a basin. The husband began washing his wife’s feet. Then the husband gently touched his baby boys feet and began the process of washing them as well. My eyes filled with tears as I thought of this father was humbling himself before his son. In that instant I understood these words like never before: For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many (Matt 20:28, NLT).
May God allow us to see/find opportunities to serve and give ourselves so that others might experience His love here on earth.
